Parenting Courses
One Family offers a range of parenting courses for people who parent alone or share parenting, on a continuous basis throughout the year: Positive Parenting, Parenting Teens & Learning how to Communicate as a Family, and Parenting When Separated. Are you finding it hard to cope with your children?
Positive Parenting | Register on an on-going basis to be included in the next course | 10 weeks | €50
Allowing you to build on your parenting skills, this group-based course is aimed at parents with children aged 2-10 years. You will explore why children misbehave and ways in which you can handle their difficult behaviour. You will also cover areas such as family change, the importance of play, how to deal with fussy eating and much more. One morning per week.
Are you struggling to talk to your teenager?
Parenting Teens & Learning how to Communicate as a Family | Register on an on-going basis to be included in the next course | 10 weeks | €50
This course helps parents to build a stronger family unit and is aimed at parents with children aged 2-16 years. In this course, you will explore ways to resolve conflicts in your family using negotiation skills. This course will also help you in using direct communication to deal with family dilemmas. One morning per week.
Are you separating, separated or divorced?
Parenting When Separated | Register on an on-going basis to be included in the next course | 10 weeks | €50
This progamme is developed in association with Dr John Sharry and the Parents Plus – Parenting when Separated Programme and runs one morning per week. It may help you to:
- solve co-parenting problems in a positive way that focuses on the needs of children
- cope with the emotional impact of separation
- learn stress management technique
- help your children cope with the impact of the separation both emotionally and practically
- enhance communication with your children and with your children’s other parent
The courses above take place in Dublin 2. One Family offers a free, part-time creche service for parents accessing our services. Read about the experiences of some of the lone parents who have participated in our courses here.
Other One Family Parenting Supports
Do you want to explore specific issues about being a one-parent family?
We will be offering a series of workshops in the year ahead which will explore issues specific to one-parent families, including How to make shared parenting work and Talking to your child about your family situation.
Are you stressed? Do you feel your stress makes parenting more difficult?
A 6-week course in Managing Stress, and the impact it has on parenting, may be the course for you. Explore how you deal with stress and learn skills to manage your stress so that you can parent positively and deal with the life challenges you face. Details on the next course will be posted here soon.
Do you have worries you can’t figure out on your own?
One Family Counselling provides confidential, one-to-one time for you to talk through your problems with a counsellor.
Information support for dads
One Family will be running support meetings for dads over the coming months. These include Practicing Good Communication Skills to Manage Conflict. These meetings are a good opportunity to explore parenting issues that affect you and your child while also meeting with other dads in a similar situation.
Parent mentoring
Parent mentoring provides individual sessions for parents looking at child behaviour. The sessions help you to understand your children’s behaviour and give you the tools to deal with challenging behaviour effectively.
Childcare service

Parenting tips
Parenting alone or sharing parenting can be a challenge, so One Family has produced a range of booklets and articles to help you cope. See here for more.
Social group
One Family’s popular social group allows lone parents to meet other parents in a similar situation to themselves in a relaxed environment, to form friendships and to take some time out for themselves. Please call 01 662 9212 for more details. All courses have a small fee which can be discussed at registration.
Child Contact Centres
Barnardos and One Family are taking referrals for the first Child Contact Centres in Ireland – safe, friendly places where children can spend time with the parent/s they do not live with. Read more.
